The popular palmetto tree and crescent moon design is a symbol of South Carolina pride. Both the crescent moon and the palmetto played an important part in South Carolina history. The palmetto tree symbolizes the defense of Fort Moultrie from the British in June 1776. Fort Moultrie was built from palmetto tree logs. The crescent moon symbolizes the emblem worn by South Carolina Revolutionary War soldiers.
